If you compare the TV series with the novel there are obvious shortcomings. I was browsing through my parent’s library and found the book.
It is also remarkable what Clavell the person has done with this work. They also brought with them Catholicism, with the aim of converting the heathens in Japan. Hell, I don’t know, how about you chop off the last pages that include shogjn giant battle you’ve been building up to in the first thousand pages?
Commendable, considering that before arriving in Japan he’d been a raping, murdering and pillaging pirate.
Blackthorne’s plans to attack the ‘Black Ship’ are also complicated by his respect and friendship for his Portuguese colleague, Rodrigues, who is now to pilot the shogub. I like a good adventure story, I also like a good solid novel with engaging characters and a unique narrative: Through his heroism he is made Samurai and becomes a valuable asset to lord Toranaga, a major overlord vying for domination of Japan.
Still, it’s a great book. And when someone’s story-telling is so literal, there’s not much left to look for other than the plot. Too often, it seems that authors who incorporate religion into their stories “pick a team” and then write the story around why their team is the winning team. This book said a lot more about late 20th century America than Imperial Japan at the dawn of the 17th century, but its plot was compelling enough and it gave me enough Richard CHamberlain flashbacks for me to finish.

I recommend this book to everyone. A co This is The One Lcavell favourite book of all time. He is so multi-faceted and unpredictable that he was a flavell to read.
