Sounds good on a first glance. The quality of the actual language is pessow. In order not to demean ourselves in our own eyes, it is enough that we should become accustomed to harbouring no ambitions, passions, desires, hopes, impulses or feelings of restlessness. For me The Book of Disquiet ‘s ppessoa was too presumptuous by an order of magnitude.

The man sitting in that cafe is a wonderful guy with deeply philosophical thoughts. Its beauty resides in the quality of writing, which can be enjoyed by all readers with a metaphysical bent. Give him a mirror and please, please, show him out the door!

At times I was 3-starring this, especially toward the end, because it got to be a drag reading about all this “life is a dream” and “tedium again” and “death is better than life, only then I wouldn’t be able to bemoan life, which is my bread and butter” stuff. Soares was not just a pseudonym for Pessoa writing as himself. Unfortunately, that little slice of the ethereal was by far the exception here. He is living alone in his apartment a block away from that cafe. La principale opera in prosa di Pessoa: So far, the best book that I’ve read this year.
