On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness

In the second half of this book, Forgiveness is interrogated as he comes to the conclusion that forgiveness can only come from the “unforgiveable”, and is precluded by the cosmopolitnaism of the forgiveable. They are nonetheless indissociable: We are all heir, at least, to persons or events marked, in an essential, interior, ineffaceable fashion, by crimes against humanity. In the case of forgiveness, this potential perversion concerns sovereignty, which is defined by the capacity to grant fogriveness, a capacity, however, that Derrida–reading Kant and to a certain extent Arendt with Hegel–demonstrates is indeed a privation.


Yet when Derrida traces the impossibility of forgiveness or hospitality–when he indicates the impossible cosmopolitanlsm of the ethical–he does not solve or resolve a problem for ethics or politics, and this is an accomplishment.
