Such a well-designed monster should not garner guffaws based on his moniker alone. I loved the characters in Carrion Comfort. Melanie and others who use the Ability are mind vampires.

I found myself cheering on those who aimed to rid the world of evil. I was impressed by the way Simmons handled this. That human chess game was horrifying.

While it shouldn’t have been so jarring, it most certainly was.

But I think the reason the author left Melanie alive simmpns to remind the reader that there’s still monsters out there in the real world, and they still hold all the cards, existing for the sole purpose of causing humanity tremendous suffering.

Carrion Comfort is one of those books that are so well written and so gripping, that you just have to keep on reading. Natalie and Saul are so fleshed out, they feel like real people csrrion you are genuinely invested in their lives which makes what happens to them so hard.

Is revenge a moral justification? Oh and they all have the power of mind control. The violence is creative. The opening, the final fight with the “Honky Monster”, who we will discuss more in a minute and the final fight with Justin. Simmons offers us a huge, ambitious monster of a novel. Saul, Natalie and Rob Gentry were all solid protagonists, and likeable!

Yeah, ean are monsters, but they aren’t scary.

I am so glad to be done with this one. Melanie begins setting up a new series of controlled helpers and a new life in Philadelphia. They get off on the terrible things they can make people do to themselves and others.

It’s an inextricable part of the novel but towards the end becomes overt and slows the ccomfort at a time when one would expect the opposite. But this story would be nothing without the anti heroes-the enemies-the villains.
