The pathos drips off the pages. The perils of colonialism, interfering with ancient tribes and the repercussions of going jrrmyn bit too native. While it might make more sense in the context of a culture where people committed suicide upon finding out they had a black great-something-grandparent, it’s still a festering heap of rotting nonsense. Arthur became a scholar, eventually visiting the Belgian Congo on a research expedition, where he heard tales of a stone city of white apes and the stuffed body of a white ape goddess, which had since gone missing.

They did not expect to hear Sir Alfred Jermyn emit a shrill, inhuman scream, or to see him seize his clumsy antagonist with both hands, dash it to the floor of the cage, and bite fiendishly at its hairy throat.
He paints a wonderful portrait of a deeply flawed family, dealing with generations of oddity and madness culminating in a twist that whilst may be obvious in the modern world, I’m sure shook some of his contemporaries.
