This book “fills in” the portrait of the Amish by providing a very clear, readable, though factual history of the Amish “progression”, if you will. Pennsylvania State University, was a scholar of Amish and Hutterite societies, a Fulbright scholar, and occasional film consultant and expert witness.
He was extremely pleased with it. I learned a lot more from experience than from books, though. Anyway, this book is giving me plenty of new insight and information and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
But the curious thing is that this practice never seems to come up against the boundary-crossing that was the life and preaching of Jesus.

Jun 13, Emily rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Dismayed by inaccurate popular essays on the Amish, Hostetler published Amish Life Herald Press, and The Amish Herald Press,books still in print at his death, whose combined sales approachedcopies at that time. I like that they farm and that they don’t learn stuff that’s not practical, but I love to learn about stuff.
I refer especially to the strong in-group mentality, and the resulting tensions with the “world”. This is an absolutely invaluable book for understanding the Amish! I enjoyed it from this perspective. On the one hand it’s awesome that they are able to be a people who don’t use technology, but on the other they don’t believe in knowledge for the sake of knowledge and they are hypocrites because they do use technology sometimes. If you’ve read some of the high-quality books put out by The People’s Place and would really like to know more, this is where to look.
This IS a textbook and like all textbooks tends to be analytical as well as informative. In depth no nonsense review of the Amish Society from European immigration to present day.
