Eon’s unprecedented display of skill at the Dragoneye ceremony places him in the centre of a power struggle between the Emperor and his High Lord brother.
I felt like there was just enough world-building to goidman drawn to this world that is ruled by politics and magic equally. Gopdman backstory, and mythology is on point. The sense of thunder rumbling ominously in the distance.

Not only this, but she adds a very diverse cast, two being particularly fascinating protagonists, one a transgender, the other a eunuch. For me she was a success, but my knowledge of Asian culture is probably heavily pop-culture influenced so rfborn my opinion there with a grain of salt.
