Trilogie de Pan 3 books. Stepping into any of his books, but especially this one, is like embarking on a genetic recoding of one’s self. Les Grands cheminsconsiderably less dark, deals with the nature of the road, gambling, the lie, and friendship, again in a first-person narration entirely in the voice of the protagonist and devoid of explanation or elucidation from the author. He ultimately set it aside, no doubt considering it too derivative, and moved on to the other projects it gave rise to.

This book got me going on Giono for a while. It touches and teaches about life, about living, about relationships, everything, simply by showing. Also worthy of mention is his Voyage en Italie I want to run my fingers through the round golden grains of Panturle’s harvest. The other novels Giono published during the nineteen-thirties on the whole reain in the same vein, set in Provence, with peasants as protagonists, and displaying a pantheistic view reggain nature.

That this deserted village is the seed of civilization and rebirth. But “Harvest” is a gem. Le livre se lit bien. Views Read Edit View history. Not to mention – a woman who has been gang-raped and then exploited for work, it just didn’t ring true that she would join Panturle so easily. The tone, and the main character, change completely during the course of the novel from dark and almost menacing to bursting with life and quiet joy.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. Lists with This Book. And some of the similes failed too — but I suppose that could be a loss from translation. Not to mention the storyline is downright boring and I had to force myself to plod along to the end. Toutefois, c’est juste pas trop mon type de roman. Stylistically brilliant, it consists of the juxtaposed accounts of events as told by the different people affected, devoid of explanation, from which the reader must piece together the meaning.
Giono does so many small things right: The path was nothing more than a tiny rill, dried up to the bone. Jul 07, Delenn rated it really liked it. His novels thus began to be set in a specific time and place, confronting the protagonists with specific politics, issues, causes and events, in contrast with the timelessness of his earlier work.
It wasn’t nearly as engaging or interesting.
