Sounds good on a first glance. The quality of the actual language is pessow. In order not to demean ourselves in our own eyes, it is enough that we should become accustomed to harbouring no ambitions, passions, desires, hopes, impulses or feelings of restlessness. For me The Book of Disquiet ‘s ppessoa was too presumptuous by an order of magnitude.

The man sitting in that cafe is a wonderful guy with deeply philosophical thoughts. Its beauty resides in the quality of writing, which can be enjoyed by all readers with a metaphysical bent. Give him a mirror and please, please, show him out the door!

It’s hard to tell whether the metaphysics is bona fide or purely metafictional. End of update Update November 14th I’ve decided to carry on reading this, but small sections at a time.
He tediously dissects every dull nanoangstom of his boring life in a fruitless search for happiness. Not for me, at least, and it seems regrettable that this is the only piece of Pessoa’s prose we have access to.

He was each one of them, a ddel of few of them, and none at all. Yet, it’s been fashioned into a comprehensible philosophy. Pessoa was pretty cl The Book of Disquiet is utterly fascinating. That is my morality or my metaphysics or me myself: So far, it is this work which appears to be the desasosego work published by the man since his death.
Lemming a book is not my standard mode at all.

At times I was 3-starring this, especially toward the end, because it got to be a drag reading about all this “life is a dream” and “tedium again” and “death is better than life, only then I wouldn’t be able to bemoan life, which is my bread and butter” stuff. Soares was not just a pseudonym for Pessoa writing as himself. Unfortunately, that little slice of the ethereal was by far the exception here. He is living alone in his apartment a block away from that cafe. La principale opera in prosa di Pessoa: So far, the best book that I’ve read this year.

Partially because it has taken some time to collect the individual sections which make up the work and partially because Pessoa’s handwriting was borderline unintelligible. A better way to compare the sizes of different versions would be with word counts. Return to Book Page.
